We were to design a machining center that would have one primary function - to machine
connecting rods. A machine that does not require the additional expensive
features of an ‘off the shelf’ machining center, but one that is capable of
producing a high volume of parts.It would include all the benefits of a
traditional machining center, in that we can change the fixtures and
software in approximately five hours and start work on different part very
simply. To change fixtures on a transfer machine it can take many months and
prove very expensive.
With our new machine, one of the main advantages is to accommodate a slow
ramp up in volume. For example, a production line can run with one machine
in place and as soon as volumes dictate, we simply ‘bolt on’ extra machines
where required, change the fixtures and software
quickly and easily to start work
Our machining centre can be produced in a four spindle version for small
rods of up to four Litres, a three spindle version for medium rods of up to
twelve Litres and a two spindle version for large heavy duty rods.
These machines were designed in response to our customer’s desire to retain
the best possible price, as with transfer machines, but adding the
flexibility needed due to the uncertainty of engines meeting their planned
volumes.
